Ellie Jane Goulding was born in Hereford England on December 30 1986. Tracey Goulding Summers is her mother. Her father Arthur Goulding comes from a funeral home-based family. Goulding, the second born child of the family, has an older sister called Isabel as well as a younger sister named Jordan. Alex her brother plays bass and is a member of a Hereford group. She was encouraged by her mother to study music as a young girl. The clarinet was her first instrument when she turned nine. When she was 14 she began to write her own songs but didn't begin truly pursuing songwriting until her college period. Goulding started to show an interest in electronics music as she was completing her education. Through MySpace she was able to connect with producer Frankmusik and with his help she developed her own style of folktronica. Jamie Lillywhite was a scout who came across her at that time. He initially served as manager, but then was promoted to A.&R. for a university competition. Lillywhite later introduced her with the producer Starsmith who assisted in the publication on November 15, 2009 of her debut single Under the Sheets. He then worked on Lights. The fact that Under the Sheets was released on Neon Gold Records (an indie label), she already was signed to Polydor Records.
